SURAT: Within hours of his removal as vice-chancellor of Darul Uloom, Deoband, Maulana Gulam Mohammad Vastanvi flew abroad to raise funds for his educational institutes, especially a Rs 100-crore medical college at Badnapur village of Jalna district in Maharashtra.

"Though I am not happy with the decision, I am not going to challenge it in court or by any other way,'' Vastanvi said, adding that he would focus on the development of Jamia Islamia Ishatul Uloom. "My removal will not affect my plans to spread education among Muslim in India," he said.

He took a plane from New Delhi to the UK on a visit to Europe to sell his plans for the expansion of JIIU to donors. Headquartered at the tribal town of Akkalkuwa on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border, JIIU, which has an annual budget of Rs 40 crore, caters to more than 2.5 lakh students across India. Nearly 2 lakh students have graduated from the professional courses offered by JIIU, half of whom were provided education free of charge.

Maulana Huzefa Vastanvi, CEO of JIIU and son of Maulana Vastanvi, said the funds for the medical college were raised from JIIU alumni and that the college would open in 2012. He said a 300-bed hospital had been constructed to go with the medical college.

As in Akkalkuwa and Badnapur, JIIU runs a college offering BPharm as well as courses in Unani medicine in Kunjkheda at Kannad taluka near Aurangabad.
