Rail traffic takes a beating

MANGALORE: Heavy rain lashing coastal districts had a bearing on the road and rail traffic in the region. Landslips at various places in Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada district in the last 24 hours up to Sunday morning meant that trains had to be cancelled, and were running late, road traffic diverted and road users cautioned on overflowing rivers. Revenue, police, National Highways departments worked hard to ensure that things were normal.

An engine derailed between Kadakaravalli and Donigal of South Western Railway when it hit a huge boulder that had fallen on the track. Due to this, train 16517 Yesvantpur Kannur express was cancelled between Hassan and Kannur. Similarly, train 16518 Kannur Yeshwantpur express was also cancelled between Kannur and Mangalore on Sunday and the train operated from Mangalore Central instead after the track was cleared by afternoon.

Landslide occurred on Konkan Railway route between Sindhudurg and Kudal stations blocking the service of Kerala bound trains. Train 16345 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Thiruvananthapuram Netravati Express was running late by 12 hours, train 12619 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Mangalore Matsyagandha Express late by nine hours, and train 12223 Lokmanya Tilak-Ernakulam Duronto Express late by six hours on Sunday.

Train 12133 Mumbai CST Mangalore Junction express was running late by seven hours.

Train 12620 Mangalore Junction - Lokmanya Tilak Matsyagandha Express scheduled to start from Mangalore Jn at 12.50 pm started at 9 pm on Sunday. Train 12134 Mangalore Junction- Mumbai CST Express scheduled to start from Mangalore Junction at 4.45 pm started at 12.15 am on Monday. Efforts were on to restore normal train service on this route.

A landslip some two kilometres after DK district border in Chikmagalur district meant that traffic along NH 234 through Charmady Ghat was disrupted for several hours. Traffic was diverted via Mudigere Handpost Janapura, Hanbal, Anne Mahal to join NH 75 near Sakleshpur. Personnel from NH Sakleshpur sub-division pressed earth excavating machines to clear the mudslip and normal traffic was restored along Charmady Ghat by afternoon.
In Uttara Kannada district, a major landslip at Idugunji near Yellapur along NH 63 disrupted traffic. Revenue officials under the direction of DC B N Krishnaiah worked overtime to get the mudslip cleared and facilitated the movement of stranded traffic. Uttara Kannada district as on date recorded 17,229 mm rainfall compared to 12,614 mm rainfall in the same period last year. DC said he has brought this incident to the notice of the state government.
