NAGPUR: The water treatment capacity of the city is set to be enhanced with the start of construction of new water treatment plant to treat 115 MLD a day at Godhani. Similarly, functioning of 240 MLD new plant at Kanhan will start from August.

Chairman of Nagpur Municipal Corporation's water supply committee, Prakash Totwani confirmed the developments to TOI. Briefing about the Godhani water treatment plant, Totwani said that the Rs 220-crore project, which was sanctioned under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), would come up at a 5-acre site. Of the sanctioned amount, 50% is part of JNNURM, while state government will contribute 20% and 30 % by the NMC.

He said that of the sanctioned amount, Rs 10 crore would be spent for setting up of the treatment plant, while the rest will be used for other works including laying of pipelines in the 27-km stretch from Mahadula -via-Godhani to Rajbhavan tank.

Laying of about 16 km of pipeline has been completed, while the work for laying another 6.50 km of pipeline, which will pass through the farmland of MLA Sunil Kedar, has been halted, he said.

"But recently, Kedar gave his consent and after monsoon, the remaining work of laying pipeline will be completed," said Totwani.

Once completed, water from the plant will be stored in Rajbhavan water tank, from where it will be supplied to 24 overhead tanks which will come up in east, north, central and west Nagpur, he said.

At present, the five plants (four at Gorewada-420 MLD and one at Kanhan - 115 MLD) have the capacity to treat over 535 MLD of drinking water which are supplying water across NMC limits.

The construction work of the treatment plant by Veolia Water India Pvt Ltd is expected to start soon and the project would be commissioned in two years, said Totwani.

The civic body will also start a 240 MLD water treatment plant at Kanhan from the first week of August, said Totwani. He said that once the new plant starts functioning, it would solve the drinking water scarcity in east and north Nagpur areas to a great extent.
