NAGPUR: City police chief Ankush Dhanvijay said that police would be on their toes on Tuesday when the Supreme Court would hear the case related to controversial burial of Baba Mustafa.

He said the police were keeping a hawk eye on the developments in view of expected hearing of the case in apex court on Tuesday.

Earlier, high court, that had ordered exhumation of Baba's body and its burial at proper place, had granted time until July 19 to feuding parties to approach the supreme court for appeal.

Dhanvijay appealed to the citizens to maintain peace and respect the court's order. Mominpura was in the throes of tension after the followers of Baba buried his body in the premises of the Mohammed Ali Sarai on June 29. The burial triggered riots in the locality with followers clashing with groups that wanted the body removed. Police had to clamp curfew for around a fortnight to bring the situation under control.

The case eventually landed in Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court that ordered Nagpur Municipal commissioner and city police chief to exhume the body of the Godman from the sarai. The state government too filed a caveat in the supreme court regarding the case.

"We would not think twice before imposing curfew once again on any part of the city if the law and order situation so demanded such a decision.

"The force is prepared and we would take strict measures against any group or individual trying to sabotage peace," said Dhanvijay.

He added that Mominpura would be provided with tight security and so would the other sensitive pockets where clashes between different groups are possible.

The episode has already seen one of the longest spells of curfew in the city. The situation also resulted in schools and local businesses being closed for a long period resulting in inconvenience to citizens. The heavy deployment has also cast a huge burden on the police force whose weekly offs have been cancelled.
