After spinal injuries, walking on screws & rods

Category : City |  Posted Date : 23/07/2011

LUDHIANA: It's a couple of screws and rods that keep Suman Mahendru of Neem Wala Chowk together and she's not complaining one bit. Smiling as she took cautious steps across a room, the 50-year-old said, "After falling from a rooftop that was 14 feet high, there was no hope I will ever move again." After being turned away by several doctors, who said she can't be cured due to paraplegia, Suman finally approached doctors at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). They took up the challenge and now join Suman in celebrating her life. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal, head of department of neurosurgery, said, "Suman was suffering with compression of spinal cord and paraplegia due to fracture in the vertebra. We had to put two titanium rods and four screws in Suman's body to help her get back on her feet."

Talking about the surgery's complication, Dr Grewal said, "The spinal cord's nerves were ruptured causing excessive bleeding. We had to stitch the nerves before implanting the rods and screws. The other risk was the possibility of bed sores or blood clotting in the body.? Grateful for limbs that work, Suman said, "It is like second birth for me and I am really thankful to God for blessing me with normal health even though it's some screws that hold my body together." For the team of doctors who conducted the surgery, Suman was not the only success story. Dr Grewal said some days ago a 17-year-old boy, Ram Thakur, was also brought to them whose spinal cord had compressed near the cervical."We had to install a plate and four screws to treat him,'' said Dr Grewal.
