6 govt schools close down as students say goodbye

Category : City |  Posted Date : 13/07/2011

MANGALORE: Even when the government is making all efforts to implement the Right to Education Act, it has not been able to protect six schools in Dakshina Kannada, which were forced to close down due to lack of students and infrastructure.

While four government schools including Kemmanaballi Higher Primary School in Sullia, Bantwal Model Higher Primary School in Bantwal, Kapikad Higher Primary School in Mangalore, Moodukonaje Higher Primary School and Perodi Higher Primary School in Moodbidri in the district have already closed down, two more schools are awaiting department's directive to close their doors permanently.

The classrooms of the 39-year-old Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Lower Primary School in Malavoor in Mangalore taluk remained empty when the last batch of students including Kavya, Rasheeda, Jamshida, Faizal, Sahil, Joshan, Manoj and Dheeraj said good bye to join a better school this year. Officials of the department of public instructions had no other option before them but to close the School. Though two GLPSs at Malavoor and Uliya Pavooru in the taluk were already closed due to lack of students, the block education officer (BEO) concerned is yet to receive an official letter with regard to the closure of schools.

Parents of those eight students in Malavoor school refused to send their children to the school as there is no proper infrastructure. Children need to exert enormous energy to reach the school, which is situated on top of a hill about four kms away from the main road. The railway track between the school and the main road make childrens journey to the school literally adventurous and dangerous too. The department has deputed two teachers, who were working in the school to nearby schools.

Similar is the case of Uliya Pavooru GLPS, where the number of students was only four in the previous academic year. Students strength came down to zero forcing officials to close down the school and the only teacher in the school was sent to a nearby school.

BEO Rajalakshmi told TOI that initiatives will be taken to reopen the schools, if parents are willing to send their children.
